Capitol Mall Association (CMA) is a community development corporation that provides affordable housing opportunities to first time home buyers to re-establish inner city neighborhoods, and supports crime and blight reduction programs, as well as community service programs to help build a stronger sense of community among the residents.
CMA is a 501 c ( 3), non-profit corporation that is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of residents, area property and business owners, and advisors from the City of Phoenix and the State of Arizona.
CMA primarily serves the downtown Phoenix neighborhoods bound by I-10 Freeway North and the railroad tracks South of Harrison Street; 27th Avenue to 7th Avenue. In 2007, the Board of Directors voted to expand CMA’s housing services mission City Wide with a focus on underserved areas.
Established in 1987, CMA has a proven record of accomplishment with measurable outcomes in the areas of housing development, historic preservation, community restoration, and crime reduction. Through CMA’s projects, activities and partnerships, Capitol Mall and surrounding areas have been able to:
- Increase homeownership by 15% to 65%.
- Generate over $8 million dollars in housing development, community restoration grand funds, and contributions.
- Clean up over 5,000 tons of trash, litter and debris, paint over 250 home exteriors, plant over 100 trees throughout the neighborhood and replace broken windows in over 50 homes.
- Reduce violent crime by 43% and property crime by 35%.
- Graduate over 300 Youths ages 9 – 11 from a drug and gang intervention program named DEFY.
- Focus on language learning skills for adults to assist in job acquisition.
- Graduate 40 adults from Financial Literacy programs.
CMA views its mission as enhancing the quality of life within the Capitol Mall area by supporting programs and activities that encourage neighborhood revitalization, historic preservation, increased homeownership and economic development.
CMA is dedicated to sustaining and rebuilding safe neighborhoods by developing various levels of quality ownership and rental properties, as well as, coordinating services and programs that the community needs and desires.
CMA is the lead agency providing community based support programs such as: Affordable Housing, English Language Learning, Youth Leadership Development, Parenting Development, After School programs, Crime and Blight reduction programs.
